Descend into the Victorian underworld of Llechwedd Slate Caverns in Blaenau Ffestiniog — Wales's most dramatic industrial heritage experience, where lantern-lit tunnels and thundering underground lakes tell the story of the men who roofed the world.
What to expect
Board a Victorian-era inclined tramway and plunge steeply into the mountain as your guide narrates the daily reality of slate miners working by candlelight in the 1860s. The caverns open into cathedral-like chambers where dramatic sound-and-light installations have been added without diminishing the raw authenticity. Above ground, the slate-grey townscape of Blaenau Ffestiniog — set within Snowdonia's mountains — is hauntingly beautiful and unlike anywhere else in Wales. Combine with a short journey on the narrow-gauge Ffestiniog Railway for an optional and wonderfully nostalgic finale through the mountain passes.
