Glide silently through the mangrove waterways of Kuala Selangor at nightfall as thousands of synchronised fireflies blink in the riverside trees — one of Southeast Asia's most magical and little-known natural spectacles, just 45 minutes from Port Klang.
What to expect
Small, silent wooden sampans push off from the jetty as the light drains from the sky, punting slowly along creek channels lined with berembang trees. As darkness falls, the riverbanks erupt with thousands of Pteroptyx tener fireflies pulsing in perfect synchrony — a natural phenomenon so surreal it's been compared to a living Christmas tree. A knowledgeable guide explains the beetles' ecology and the mangrove's importance to coastal Selangor. On the return journey, silver river reflections and the sound of night insects complete the experience.
Good to know
Tours depart after 7:30 pm, so this works best on late all-aboard evenings (check with guest services). Book private charters directly with the resort for a more intimate experience. Insect repellent and a light layer are recommended. The reserve is approximately 45 minutes from Port Klang by private taxi or car.
