Stand on the rim of one of Japan's most dramatic volcanic calderas — the ethereally beautiful Lake Toya, framed by Mount Usu, a still-active volcano. Raw Hokkaido nature at its most breathtaking.
What to expect
Depart Muroran port and travel just 40–50 minutes to Lake Toya, a shimmering circular caldera lake considered one of Hokkaido's crown jewels. Ride the Mount Usu ropeway for panoramic views over the lake and volcanic crater (ropeway fare approx. JPY 1,800 per person). Walk the eruption memorial zone where lava froze mid-flow in 2000. On clear days, spy the cone of Mount Yotei across the water. End with a lakeside stroll before returning to port.
Good to know
Lake Toya is only ~45 min from Muroran — the closest bucket-list stop on this coastline. Ropeway tickets purchased on arrival. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Ideal even for shorter port calls of 6–7 hours.
