Board the legendary Panama Canal Railway in the glass-domed observation car for a one-hour crossing of the isthmus — one of the world's most dramatic train journeys, threading jungle, lakes, and the Canal corridor from ocean to ocean.
What to expect
The train departs Colón station (a short taxi from Cristobal Pier) and hugs the western bank of the Canal, offering front-row views of container ships transiting the waterway from the comfort of your panoramic Dome Car seat. As the train crosses Gatún Lake on a narrow causeway, the sheer scale of the Canal system — jungle on one side, ocean-going vessels on the other — is breathtaking. In Panama City (47 min), a pre-arranged private guide can whisk you to the UNESCO-listed Casco Antiguo colonial quarter for lunch before the return train. Cold drinks and light snacks are available on board.
Good to know
Departs Colón 07:15 (confirm current schedule at panarail.com). Dome Car seats sell out fast — book directly online well ahead. If doing a round trip, the return departs Panama City at 17:15, comfortably before most all-aboard times. A private taxi from Cristobal Pier to Colón station is ~USD 5–8.
