Descend into one of the world's most accessible and dramatic lava tubes — a cathedral-like volcanic chimney with a glittering underground lake. This is Terceira's single most extraordinary natural wonder, and utterly unlike anything else in the Azores.
What to expect
You'll descend some 45 metres underground through a narrow entrance into a vast lava tube formed 2,000 years ago, its walls draped in white silica stalactites. The central chamber opens dramatically around a crystal-clear subterranean lake fed by rainwater. A knowledgeable local guide explains the geology of the Azores' volcanic system in vivid detail. The temperature is a cool 16°C year-round — a refreshing contrast to the island's summer warmth.
Good to know
The cave is roughly 20 minutes' drive from Praia da Vitória. Pre-book a guided tour to secure a timed entry slot, as daily visitor numbers are strictly capped. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring a light layer. Allow 2.5–3 hours total including transfer. All-aboard times are typically comfortable for a half-day.
