San Carlos Scenic Drive & Mirador: Tetakawi Peak Hike

Ascend the iconic twin-peaked Tetakawi — the ancient Yaqui sacred mountain that defines the San Carlos skyline — for a panoramic sweep over the entire Sea of Cortez. The short but rewarding trail rewards with one of Sonora's most photographed vistas: turquoise bays, rust-red volcanic rock, and open Pacific horizon.

What to expect

The trail begins at the base of San Carlos village and winds through a surreal landscape of towering saguaro, cholla, and elephant-trunk boojum trees. At the summit, the view opens to a 270° panorama that takes in San Carlos Bay, the Bacochibampo volcanic cones, and on clear days, the distant Baja peninsula. Your guide shares the mountain's deep cultural history while you photograph one of the most dramatic natural vistas in northwest Mexico.

Good to know

San Carlos is a 15-minute taxi ride from the pier. Begin the hike early — ideally at 8am — to beat both midday heat and the afternoon sun. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, carry at least one litre of water per person, and allow 2.5–3 hours round trip. The trailhead is well-marked near the San Carlos marina area.
