Journey inland to the heritage village of Ardara for a curated afternoon of hand-crafted Donegal whiskey at the Ardara Distillery and a tour of the celebrated tweed weavers whose looms have clothed the world's most discerning dressers for over a century.
What to expect
The drive from Killybegs to Ardara unfolds through bog and mountain scenery before the village appears, all coloured shopfronts and the sound of looms. At the distillery, a passionate guide walks you through pot-still distillation and the ageing philosophy behind Ardara's award-winning single malt, culminating in a guided tasting in the intimate barrel room. From there, a short stroll brings you to the weaving workshops, where the rhythmic percussion of hand-operated Donegal tweed looms fills the air and bolts of extraordinary cloth are laid out for your inspection — and purchase. Lunch at a local restaurant (The Nesbitt Arms or Nancy's Bar) can be woven in.
Good to know
Ardara is approximately 25 minutes from Killybegs by private car or taxi — pre-book a return transfer to guarantee your all-aboard time. Allow 3–4 hours for the full experience. Distillery tours benefit from advance reservation, especially in summer. Nancy's Bar is a genuine Irish institution; do not leave without a bowl of their chowder.
