Wander one of Arabia's oldest trading souqs with a licensed local guide who knows every merchant, every alley of frankincense, and every hidden courtyard. The Muttrah Corniche at golden hour is among the Gulf's most cinematic promenades.
What to expect
Your guide meets you at the ornate Muttrah gate and weaves you through the labyrinthine alleyways, pausing to explain the provenance of each commodity — frankincense grades, silver hallmarks, and the art of Omani perfumery. A stop at a heritage coffee house for qahwa (spiced Omani coffee) and dates is followed by a stroll along the crescent Corniche, where colourful dhows bob against a backdrop of Portuguese-era forts. The guide points out Al Jalali and Al Mirani Forts perched on the headlands above.
Good to know
Muttrah Souq is a 5-minute walk or 3-minute taxi from Port Qaboos — the most port-convenient excursion on this list. Souq shops open by 09:00 and close 12:30–16:00; plan your walk for the morning. Carry riyals in small denominations for purchases. The walk is mostly flat; allow 2.5–3 hours for the full experience.
