Here’s the bucket list for your day ashore: the most extraordinary thing to do at each stop, who runs it, and how to book it direct — so you can weigh it against your ship’s excursion and pick what suits you.
Ships dock at Port Sultan Qaboos, berths 4 or 5, directly opposite Mutrah. It is not a tender port. You cannot walk through the port area; a free shuttle bus takes you from the gangway to the port gate or directly to the Mutrah Souq area, a trip of roughly three minutes. From the gate, the Corniche, souq, and Mutrah Fort are a short walk or quick taxi ride away. Old Muscat lies about 7 km further southeast.
Typical all-aboard is 30–60 minutes before the ship’s departure, which for Regent sailings in the coming months is often between 5pm and 8pm. Check your daily schedule the night before; the exact time is posted clearly. First-timers’ classic trap here is assuming the souq and Corniche represent all of Muscat and then realising too late that the Grand Mosque, Old Muscat, or any desert or wadi adventure requires real driving time. The heat compounds the error. Plan your radius before you step off the shuttle.

The Wahiba Sands Desert Adventure Dune Drive and Camp at USD 185 per person is the clearest place the ship’s version may be the better buy. The long transfer, remote location, and operator reputation (Oman Wahiba Sands Desert Tours, 4.90 from 134 reviews) make the guaranteed return-to-ship comfort worth the markup for many. The evening Muscat: Mosque, Opera, and Old Muscat Evening Tour at USD 65 per person is a tighter call; the ship’s version adds reliability after dark but costs noticeably more than piecing together the same sights independently during daylight hours.
The two cheapest culture walks stay compelling on their own. Regent passengers get a legitimate choice: pay the premium for zero logistics or invest the saved money in a second activity. Neither is wrong.
Assume an 8am–4pm window with all-aboard at 3:30pm. Take the first shuttle to the gate and do the Muscat Guided Walking Tour of Corniche, Souq and Mutrah Fort from 9am to 11am. Follow it with the Guided Walking Tour of Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque by 11:30am (taxi or arranged transfer). Be back at the ship by 2:30pm. Skip anything requiring more than an hour’s drive each way. That keeps the day relaxed, shaded where possible, and safely inside the all-aboard buffer.

Skip the desert camp and the islands on the same day; both eat the clock and add fatigue in the heat.
If I could pick only one, I would take the Wahiba Sands Desert Adventure Dune Drive and Camp run by Oman Wahiba Sands Desert Tours. At USD 185 it is the single most memorable use of a full day in Muscat, and the operator’s near-perfect scores suggest they understand cruise schedules better than most. The ship’s equivalent is a legitimate safety net, but if your risk tolerance and fitness allow the direct booking, the dunes at sunset are the reason you came to Oman.
