Chase the setting sun across the rust-red dunes of the Wahiba Sands, Oman's legendary inland sea of sand immortalised by Wilfred Thesiger. A private 4WD dune drive, camel encounter, and a Bedouin feast under the stars delivers Arabia at its most mythic.
What to expect
A luxury 4WD collects you from Port Qaboos and heads inland through dramatic mountain passes and date-palm oases. At the dunes' edge, your guide deflates the tyres for the exhilarating dune-bashing traverse to your private camp. A Bedouin host leads a camel walk at sunset as the dunes ignite in shades of copper and amber, before a lantern-lit dinner of slow-cooked shuwa lamb, fresh khubz bread, and Omani halwa. On ships with overnight Muscat calls, an optional Bedouin camp overnight with stargazing can be arranged.
Good to know
Wahiba Sands is approximately 2.5–3 hours from Port Qaboos; this excursion suits ships with an evening all-aboard of 22:00 or later, or overnight port calls — confirm your all-aboard time before booking. Depart by 10:00 for the sunset return. Lightweight long sleeves are recommended for sun and evening chill in the desert. Pre-book well in advance as private Bedouin camp experiences have very limited capacity.
