Slip into the turquoise waters of Oman's only marine nature reserve, where whale sharks, hawksbill turtles, and jewel-bright coral gardens await. Aboard a private traditional dhow, this is the Gulf of Oman at its most pristine.
What to expect
A traditional wooden dhow collects you from Port Qaboos and motors 45 minutes north-west to the protected archipelago. Your marine guide briefs you on reef etiquette and leads two snorkel sessions over vibrant coral gardens teeming with lionfish, parrotfish and reef sharks. Between dives, chilled Omani refreshments are served on deck as the crew scans for whale sharks and spinner dolphins. The return journey hugs a dramatic limestone coastline.
Good to know
The Damaniyat Islands are a 45-minute boat ride from Port Qaboos — depart no later than 08:00 to complete two snorkel sessions and return comfortably before a 17:00 all-aboard. Whale sharks are most reliably sighted Oct–Apr. Pre-book directly; bring reef-safe sunscreen as chemical sunscreens are prohibited in the reserve.
