What to expect
You enter Dantokpa from the quieter northern gate, avoiding the chaotic main entrance that disorients most first-timers. Your guide introduces you to a spice merchant whose family has held the same stall for four generations, and a 'féticheur' (Voodoo priest) who explains — without performance — the ritual use of skulls, roots, and powders sold nearby. The textiles section glows with indigo-dyed bogolan and Ghanaian kente; your guide knows which weavers offer genuine artisanal work. End with a tasting of atassi (black-eyed peas and rice) from a celebrated market cook.
Good to know
Dantokpa is 10 minutes from the cruise terminal. Go early (7–9 am) when it is freshest and coolest. Wear closed shoes — the ground is uneven and wet. Carry small CFA notes; your guide handles all bargaining. Cameras are welcome but always ask permission first via your guide.
