Conquer the sacred volcanic peak of Mauao (Mount Maunganui) for jaw-dropping 360° views of the Bay of Plenty, then descend to one of New Zealand's most beautiful surf beaches for a swim or a soak in the famous Mount Hot Pools. A perfect pairing of panorama and indulgence.
What to expect
The summit loop track (approximately 45 minutes at a comfortable pace) winds through pohutukawa trees with ever-expanding ocean views unfolding at every switchback. At the top, your guide shares the legend of Mauao — the mountain that ran to the sea — against a backdrop of island-studded bay. Descend to the famous golden beach for a swim in the Pacific, then unwind in the outdoor Mount Hot Pools, fed by natural geothermal water, before your private vehicle whisks you back to the terminal.
Good to know
The Tauranga cruise terminal is approximately 5–10 minutes from the Mount by car. The summit hike involves moderate incline — wear comfortable walking shoes. Book Independent Tours Tauranga via TripAdvisor or direct enquiry; add the Mount Hot Pools (mounthotpools.co.nz) as a ticketed add-on. Hot Pools are open from 6 am daily.
