Board the legendary Taieri Gorge Train from Dunedin's heritage railway station for a breathtaking journey through dramatic schist gorges, historic viaducts, and remote high-country landscapes. One of the great train journeys of the Southern Hemisphere.
What to expect
The journey begins at the opulent Dunedin Railway Station, its mosaic floor and stained-glass windows a spectacle before you even board. The train climbs immediately into the Taieri Gorge, crossing 10 viaducts and passing through 3 tunnels as sheer schist walls rise dramatically on either side. Open-air viewing platforms at the rear of the train put you directly in the wind and scenery — perfect for photography. The return journey to Dunedin (Pukerangi option) is usually timed beautifully for cruise passengers and includes a brief stop at Hindon for fresh country air.
