Motril is Spain's only commercial sugar-cane coast — Ron Montero its celebrated rum distillery. A guided tasting tour of the historic distillery and a private tropical-fruit finca (mango, avocado, cherimoya) is the most uniquely local experience the port offers.
What to expect
The distillery sits close to port, making this an effortlessly manageable half-day. A knowledgeable guide walks you through the pressing, fermentation and barrel-ageing process in a beautifully preserved industrial space that doubles as the town's industrial heritage museum. The tasting session showcases Ron Montero's range from light blanco to rich añejo, paired with local sweets made from cane sugar. Combine with a short drive to a private tropical-fruit finca where the estate owner introduces you to cherimoyas, medlars and avocados at the peak of their season — a sensory finale utterly unlike anything else on the Costa.
Good to know
The distillery is walkable or a short taxi from the port. Official guided tours run most mornings — book directly with the distillery or arrange a combined private excursion through a local guide. The Museo Preindustrial de la Caña de Azúcar (Sugar Cane Pre-Industrial Museum) is adjacent and complements the visit beautifully. Allow 2.5–3 hours for the combined experience, leaving ample time to explore Motril itself.
