Descend into an ancient limestone cave system illuminated by thousands of native Arachnocampa luminosa glowworms — a surreal, otherworldly experience unique to New Zealand found just 45 minutes from the port.
What to expect
A short scenic drive through Northland countryside brings you to the cave entrance, where a local expert guide sets the scene on the geology and the extraordinary bioluminescent worms overhead. Inside the cave, the ceiling transforms into a galaxy of cool blue-green light — thousands of glowworms no bigger than a match head, each spinning silk threads to catch prey. The silence and the spectacle are genuinely humbling. Above ground, native bush surrounds the property; look and listen for tūī and kererū in the canopy.
Good to know
The shore excursion package price of NZD 245 includes return transfers from Paihia — essential as the caves are inland. Tours run at set times; pre-booking is mandatory. Comfortable walking shoes and a light layer recommended inside the cave.
