Ascend Barn Bluff — the limestone sentinel rising 343 feet above the Mississippi — for a panoramic river view that stopped explorers in their tracks for centuries. This is Red Wing's defining landscape moment, bucket-list for any lover of the American West.
What to expect
The well-maintained trail winds through native prairie and oak savanna before opening onto a jaw-dropping limestone escarpment overlooking the Mississippi. From the top, you'll see the river braiding through islands, distant Wisconsin bluffs, and Red Wing's Victorian rooftops below. The bluff is steeped in Dakota Sioux heritage and was a landmark charted by early European explorers. Allow 1.5–2 hours for a leisurely, awe-inspiring ascent and descent.
Good to know
Trailhead is a 10-minute walk from the river dock. Wear sturdy shoes — the upper path is rocky. Allow yourself at least 2.5 hours including transit. Check all-aboard time carefully; this is a self-guided experience so pace is entirely your own.
