Paddle up the only navigable river in Hawaii, then hike through a jungle cathedral to a 120-foot waterfall that cascades into a cool, swimmable pool. Raw, beautiful, and deeply Hawaiian — this is Kauai at its most elemental.
What to expect
Launch from the Wailua River Marina and glide upstream through tunnels of hau tree, past ancient heiau (Hawaiian temples) on the riverbanks. A 45-minute jungle trail through giant ferns and mango trees leads to Uluwehi — Secret Falls — where you can swim beneath the cascade in one of Hawaii's most magical natural pools. The return paddle is effortless, downstream with the current.
Good to know
The Wailua River Marina is just 5 minutes by car from Nawiliwili pier — one of the most port-convenient excursions on the island. Allow 4–5 hours total; morning departures return well before all-aboard. Wear water shoes and bring a dry bag for your camera.
