Inside a predator-free valley just minutes from the city, Zealandia is the world's first urban ecosanctuary — home to tuatara, kākāpō relatives, and the rarest birds on earth. The twilight guided tour is extraordinarily rare access to wildlife found nowhere else.
What to expect
After dusk, your naturalist guide leads you through the sanctuary's 225-hectare valley where tuatara emerge from burrows, little blue penguins shuffle along the stream bank, and rare kiwi can sometimes be heard — or seen — in the undergrowth. The guide uses red-light torches to protect night vision and narrate the extraordinary recovery story of species once thought doomed. The sanctuary's forest canopy, silent except for birdsong, creates an atmosphere unlike any wildlife experience in the world. Daytime self-guided entry (from NZD 21) is also available if timing requires a daytime visit.
Good to know
The twilight tour departs at dusk — confirm your ship's all-aboard time before booking. Zealandia is a 10-minute drive or a short cable car ride + walk from the waterfront. Wear warm layers; the valley is noticeably cooler than the city. Book directly on the Zealandia website well in advance.
