Hike the full length of the Sacred Way from the sanctuary gates to Delphi's remarkably preserved Ancient Stadium — the highest point of the precinct — where Panhellenic athletes once competed in the Pythian Games with the gods as their audience.
What to expect
Departing Itea at dawn, you arrive at the site before the gates fill with day-trippers. Your guide leads you up through the terraces — the Treasury, the theatre, the altar — continuing the steep final ascent to the stadium, carved into the mountain at 570 metres altitude. The 177-metre limestone track is almost entirely intact, and the views across two mountain ranges to the Gulf of Corinth are breathtaking. Descend at leisure, finishing with the museum before the midday crowds arrive.
Good to know
Wear sturdy walking shoes — the Sacred Way is cobbled and steep. The stadium is included in the standard EUR 20 combined ticket. Allow at least 3.5 hours for site + museum. Itea is 20 min by car; arrange a private driver for the return to meet your all-aboard deadline.
