For those with extended time, board a private regional river cruise deep into the Amazon basin — sleeping aboard as the forest closes in, spotting pink dolphins, sloths, and macaws at dawn in channels untouched by mass tourism.
What to expect
Departing Santarém, a purpose-built river vessel navigates into the Arapiuns and Maró river systems, channels seldom seen by outsiders. Each morning a small skiff departs before sunrise for wildlife transects — sloths draped in cecropia trees, troops of squirrel monkeys, and giant blue morpho butterflies at every bend. Afternoons are spent with riverside ribeirinho communities who demonstrate subsistence fishing, manioc processing, and traditional plant medicine. Nights on the anchored vessel are extraordinary: a silence broken only by the forest's nocturnal orchestra and, if the timing is right, bioluminescent plankton lighting the black water. All meals, guides, and skiff excursions are included.
