Board a small local skiff for an intimate exploration of the backwater lakes where the world-famous Victoria amazonica lily pads create a surreal green mosaic across still, mirror-black water. Get close enough to touch them, photograph them, and understand their extraordinary ecology.
What to expect
You are afloat within minutes of landing, drifting into a flooded-forest gallery of ancient trees rising straight from the water, their roots submerged in the annual Amazon flood. The lily pads here can exceed 1.5 metres in diameter, their upturned rims and waxy surfaces hosting frogs and insects in a micro-ecosystem. Your boatman cuts the engine so the only sound is birdsong and the occasional plop of a kingfisher diving. The 30-minute circuit feels timeless, and the light on the water in the mid-morning is extraordinary for photography.
Good to know
Boats depart from the village dock continuously; arrive early for the calmest water and best light. Bring USD cash in small bills. This is an independent, non-pre-bookable experience; simply negotiate at the dock. The port is tender-based — factor tender queue time into your plan.
