Christchurch is the world's gateway to Antarctica — step inside the award-winning Antarctic Centre to experience a simulated polar storm, ride an amphibious Hagglund vehicle, and meet the resident little blue penguins in a genuine behind-the-scenes encounter.
What to expect
Enter a world of ice, exploration, and wildlife just 12 minutes from Lyttelton by shuttle. The centre immerses you in the story of Antarctica's exploration — from Scott and Shackleton to modern science bases — with state-of-the-art interactive exhibits. Brave the Antarctic Storm Chamber, then leap aboard a Hagglund all-terrain vehicle for an exhilarating off-road circuit. The highlight for many: the little blue penguin rehabilitation area, where rescued birds waddle freely around a naturalistic habitat with knowledgeable keepers on hand.
Good to know
A free shuttle runs from central Christchurch to the Antarctic Centre. From Lyttelton, take the Metro Bus 28 to the city (~NZD 4, 15 min), then connect. Allow 2.5–3 hours on site. Pre-book the Hagglund ride online to guarantee a slot, especially in peak season (Oct–Mar). Open daily from 09:00.
