Ride Japan's most celebrated rapid river — the Kumagawa, ranked among the country's top three clear streams — through ancient gorges of cedar and rock. Combine with a refined kaiseki-style lunch in a riverside ryokan for the perfect balance of adventure and luxury.
What to expect
Your private driver takes you southwest from the port to Hitoyoshi, a castle town cradled by mountains. You board a traditional flat-bottomed rifle boat, your boatman steering and poling with extraordinary skill through swirling rapids and glassy pools flanked by cedar forests. The ~60-minute float offers dramatic gorge scenery and occasional glimpses of kingfishers and cormorants. Afterwards, your ryokan lunch unfolds across multiple lacquer-ware courses: local river fish, Higo beef, and seasonal pickles.
Good to know
Hitoyoshi is approximately 75 minutes from Kumamoto Port — budget a full day. Pre-book both the boat and ryokan lunch well in advance, especially April–November. Waterproof layer recommended; the boatman may splash at the rapids. Confirm boat operation status if visiting after heavy rain.
