Marksburg is the sole medieval castle on the Rhine never destroyed or significantly altered — an astonishing survivor looming over Braubach, just upriver from Boppard. A private expert-led tour reveals its authentic battlements, knight's hall, and torture chamber.
What to expect
A steep 15-minute walk from Braubach village rewards you with panoramic Rhine views before you even reach the gates. Inside, a knowledgeable private guide leads you through armouries stacked with authentic medieval weapons, a functioning herb garden, and a grand knight's banqueting hall. The dungeon and torture chamber are sobering and fascinating in equal measure. The views from the battlements over the Rhine Gorge are among the finest in the valley.
Good to know
Braubach is only 8 km south of Boppard — reachable by KD Rhine ferry (approx. EUR 14 one-way) or taxi/private driver in 15 minutes. Castle open daily April–November, 10:00–17:00. Book private guide in advance by emailing the castle. Wear sturdy shoes; the cobbled ascent is steep.
