Würzburg is the heart of Franconian wine country; the 600-year-old Bürgerspital wine estate, still producing from its own vineyards, offers the most authentic cellar tasting in the city — Silvaner and Riesling poured where they were made.
What to expect
The Bürgerspital estate sits just steps from the Old Main Bridge — itself one of Germany's great Baroque bridges, lined with sandstone saints and framing the fortress above. You descend into vaulted Gothic cellars that date to the 14th century and sample three to five estate wines, guided by a sommelier who explains each Franconian grape variety and the distinctive Bocksbeutel bottle. Pair with local Franconian bread and charcuterie for a leisurely mid-morning or afternoon experience.
Good to know
Book a tasting slot directly at buergerspital.de; walk-ins are accepted but advance booking is strongly recommended in summer. The estate is a 5-min walk from the main dock, just off the Old Main Bridge. Allow 1–1.5 hrs. Combine naturally before or after a Residenz or Marienberg visit.
