Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge: Private Naturalist Kayak

Paddle silently through one of the last undisturbed coastal ecosystems on the Gulf of Mexico with a private naturalist guide. Nesting sea turtles, migratory shorebirds, and undisturbed barrier-island wilderness await less than an hour from the ship.

What to expect

Launch from a hidden tidal creek and glide into the estuarine labyrinth of Bon Secour, where Alabama's coastal wilderness remains almost exactly as Spanish explorers first saw it. Your naturalist identifies every call — clapper rails rattling in the reeds, osprey plunging for mullet, and in summer the barely-visible tracks of loggerhead turtles above the tide line. The return paddle hugs a barrier island shore of sugar-white sand backed by wind-sculpted dunes. It is genuinely wild, genuinely quiet, and genuinely rare.

Good to know

The refuge is approximately 55 minutes from the Mobile cruise terminal; arrange a private car in advance. Wear quick-dry clothing and apply reef-safe sunscreen. Summer paddles begin at first light to beat heat — confirm timing aligns with your port schedule. Bring a dry bag for camera gear.
