Journey north from Blaye into the Cognac heartland for a private behind-the-scenes distillery experience — an exclusive immersion into the alchemical world of Charentais eau-de-vie, aged in Limousin oak and blended by a Maître de Chai. Passengers who've done this excursion still dream about it years later.
What to expect
A private, air-conditioned vehicle collects you from the port and heads north through sun-drenched Charente vineyards to a family Cognac producer. The Maître de Chai leads you through the chai (aging warehouse), where thousands of barrels perfume the air with the 'angel's share.' You taste a progressive flight from VS through to a rare vintage Cognac, learning the blender's art firsthand. A light Charentais lunch — rillettes, pineau des Charentes aperitif, local cheese — often completes the experience. Return transfer to port is included.
Good to know
The drive to the Cognac region is approximately 1–1.5 hours from Blaye; this excursion requires a full-day port call. Confirm your all-aboard time carefully and communicate it to the operator. Book well in advance as private distillery sessions with the Maître de Chai are limited. This is the experience most remembered by returning passengers — do not miss it if time allows.
