Vivarais Steam Train: Ardèche Gorge Scenic Journey

Board a historic steam locomotive and wind through the breathtaking Doux Gorge into the wild Ardèche heartland. This nostalgic rail journey is the single most iconic experience available from Tournon — pure, cinematic southern France.

What to expect

Depart from Tournon station aboard a lovingly preserved 19th-century steam locomotive and chug alongside the Doux river as it carves through spectacular gorges. Tunnels, viaducts, and overhanging cliffs frame every window as the train climbs into the Ardèche highlands. The return journey offers the same dramatic scenery from a fresh angle, and the pace is unhurried enough to photograph every curve. Runs March to November with seasonal themed journeys.

The station is a short walk from the cruise dock. Book well ahead in summer — departures sell out. Allow 3–4 hours for the round trip; confirm all-aboard time before departing. Pre-book directly on the operator's website.
