Should You Take an Airboat Ride in New Orleans?

An airboat ride gets you out of the French Quarter and into the actual Louisiana swamps and bayous. Expect a loud, fast, flat-bottomed boat that skims over water and marsh grass, usually lasting 60–90 minutes. You'll likely see alligators (especially if the captain knows where to look), herons, egrets, and plenty of cypress trees. The ride itself is thrilling and windy; bring earplugs if you're sensitive to noise. It's a completely different experience from a city tour—more nature, less history—and feels genuinely remote once you're away from the dock.

The best time is spring and fall. Summer is brutally hot and humid with biting insects, while winter can be surprisingly cold on the water when the boat is moving. Aim for morning tours to avoid the worst heat and have better wildlife sightings. Expect to pay around $60–$110 per adult depending on whether you choose a standard group tour or a smaller, more private option that includes pickup from the city.

Pick a tour that leaves from the Bayou Barataria area near Jean Lafitte National Park—it's closer to real swamp terrain than some of the shorter excursions. Skip the add-on “swamp dinner” packages; you're better off eating in town where the food is actually good. Bring bug spray, sunscreen, and a light jacket no matter the season.
