Al Azhar Park in Cairo: Worth Visiting?

Al Azhar Park gives you one of the best views over Cairo's dense rooftops and minarets, especially at sunset. Expect well-kept lawns, palm trees, small fountains, and a handful of cafés and restaurants. It's a proper green space in a city that has very little of it. The park is built on the remains of old rubbish mounds, and the contrast between the clean walkways and the chaotic city below is striking. You can easily spend 2-3 hours wandering, people-watching, and taking photos. It's popular with families, couples, and a few tourists.

Best time to visit is October to April when the weather isn't punishing. Evenings are nicest; come around an hour before sunset and stay until after dark when the city lights up. In summer it stays hot and crowded well into the evening. Expect to pay around $1-3 for entry depending on the day. Food and drinks inside cost Western prices – a coffee or snack runs $3-8, a proper meal at the better restaurants can hit $15-25 per person.

Pick a table with a view at one of the upper-level restaurants if you want to linger. Skip the small paid “attractions” and kids' play areas unless traveling with children. Combine it with a walk around nearby Islamic Cairo if you have energy, but don't try to do both in the brutal midday heat.
