Egyptian Museum Cairo: Worth It?

The Egyptian Museum in Cairo holds an overwhelming collection of artifacts, from mummies and sarcophagi to Tutankhamun's treasures. Expect a grand but somewhat old-fashioned building where you'll walk through crowded rooms with limited English signage. It's genuinely impressive if you care about ancient history, but it can feel exhausting after an hour or two. The highlight is usually the Tutankhamun galleries on the upper floor with the famous gold mask and jewelry. Plan on 2-3 hours maximum; after that museum fatigue hits hard.

Visit between November and March when Cairo is cooler. Expect to pay around $15-25 for a standard adult ticket, with extra fees if you want to see the royal mummies (worth it if you're into that). Mornings are best – arrive right after opening to beat the worst crowds and tour groups. Skip the basement floor unless you have a particular interest in smaller objects; focus on the main floor and Tutankhamun section instead. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and consider hiring a guide or using an audio guide if you want context beyond the minimal labels.
