Should You Visit Alcatraz? A Practical Guide

Alcatraz is worth doing once if you're into history and have a full day to spare. The ferry ride across the bay gives you great views of the city and Golden Gate Bridge. Once on the island, you'll walk up a steep hill to the prison where a 30-45 minute audio tour walks you through the cells, mess hall, and isolation block with real former inmates and guards narrating. Expect wind, crowds, and a lot of stairs. The whole experience takes about 3-4 hours including boat time. It's atmospheric and sobering rather than thrilling.

The best time to visit is spring or fall when the weather is cooler and fog is less likely to completely obscure views. Summer can be uncomfortably hot on the island with long lines. Expect to pay around $40-70 per adult depending on whether you take the basic ferry and audio tour or add a night tour or combo package with a bike rental or bay cruise. Book at least two weeks ahead in summer; tickets regularly sell out.

Take the earliest boat you can get – it’s less crowded and the light is better for photos. Skip the overpriced official gift shop on the island and buy postcards back on the mainland. If you hate crowds or have mobility issues, think twice; the prison is not easy to navigate.
