This is one of the best half-day outings from San Francisco. You ferry across the bay to Sausalito (about 30 minutes), grab a bike, then ride back over the Golden Gate Bridge. The ride is mostly downhill or flat after the bridge, following the waterfront through the Presidio and Crissy Field. Expect beautiful views, a fair bit of wind, and sharing the path with other cyclists and tourists. The whole loop takes 4–6 hours depending on how often you stop for photos or coffee. It’s easy enough for most fitness levels but feels like a real adventure.
Best time is late spring or early fall when it’s sunny but not scorching. Summer mornings are popular but can be foggy and crowded; winter weekdays are quieter if you don’t mind cooler temps. Expect to pay around $60–90 per person total—covering ferry tickets both ways (or one way if you bike the whole loop), bike rental for half a day, and a couple of snacks or drinks. Bridge toll is usually included in rentals.
Tip: rent a regular bike or e-bike in Sausalito and ride back; the ferry ride is nicer with the wind at your back on the return. Skip the guided group tours unless you want hand-holding—renting independently gives you flexibility to stop when you want. Bring a light jacket; the bay can be chilly even when the city is warm.
