Chicago Aquarium Ticket Guide

Expect a solid but crowded experience with excellent dolphin shows, a huge Caribbean reef tank full of sharks and rays, and plenty of smaller exhibits on local Great Lakes fish. The main floor can feel like a zoo on weekends—kids everywhere, slow-moving crowds, and constant photo stops. The basement-level ocean exhibits are calmer and worth lingering in. Plan on 2.5–4 hours depending on how much you like reading every plaque. It’s genuinely impressive if you enjoy marine life, but it’s not a life-changing half-day if you’re short on time or on a tight budget.

Best time is weekday mornings from September to April when crowds are lightest and lines for the dolphin show are short. Summer is busy and hot; avoid holiday weekends. Expect to pay around $40–$55 per adult for a basic ticket that gets you in the door and to the main shows. Add-ons for special exhibits or behind-the-scenes tours push it closer to $60–$75. Kids and Chicago residents get discounts.

Honest tip: Buy the cheapest general admission and skip the add-on “experience packages” unless you really want to touch a stingray—they’re not worth the extra money for most visitors. Get there right at opening, head straight to the dolphin show to secure seats, then work your way backward through the exhibits. Bring your own snacks; the on-site food is overpriced and average.
