Pier Attractions in Chicago: Worth It?

Chicago’s pier scene basically means Navy Pier. Expect a long, busy waterfront stretch packed with shops, restaurants, carnival rides, and lakefront views. The main draws are the giant Ferris wheel, boat tours that cruise the skyline or head out onto the lake, and seasonal fireworks. It gets crowded, especially weekends and summer evenings – think tourist central with lots of families and slow walkers. The boat rides give you decent views of the skyscrapers and shoreline without needing to book a separate architecture tour. It’s fun if you want a mix of views and casual strolling, but it won’t feel like a hidden local experience.

Best time is late spring through early fall. Summer is peak season with good weather for boat decks but expect heat, lines, and higher prices. Shoulder months (May or September) are smarter – milder crowds and temperatures. Expect to pay around $15–30 for pier entry and basic attractions; boat tours usually run $35–80 depending on length and whether you add speedboat thrills or skyline narration. Food and drinks add up fast if you linger.

Pick a shorter skyline boat tour in the late afternoon for the best light on the buildings. Skip the overpriced chain restaurants on the pier itself – walk a few blocks inland or pack snacks. If you’re short on time or on a budget, you can get similar views for free from nearby parks and just skip the pier entirely.
