Skydeck Chicago: Worth It?

The Skydeck at Willis Tower puts you 1,353 feet up with floor-to-ceiling windows on all four sides. The main indoor observatory gives solid 360-degree views of the city, lake, and surrounding states on clear days. The main draw is the Ledge – four glass boxes that extend four feet out from the building so you can look straight down between your feet. Expect a fair bit of waiting in lines for tickets, security, and the elevators. The actual time on the deck is usually 15-30 minutes unless it's very quiet. It's a classic tourist experience: impressive views but crowded and brief.

Best time to go is late afternoon or right after sunset for the changing light, especially in spring or fall when the weather is milder and crowds are lighter than summer. Winter can be brutally cold and windy on the upper floors, and summer brings long lines. Expect to pay around $35-55 per adult for a basic timed ticket; add $15-25 if you want a flexible or express option. Kids and seniors get discounts.

Tip: Book a late-afternoon timed slot online in advance and skip any bundled city tours or audio guides – they're not worth it. If you're afraid of heights or it's a cloudy day, just stick to the regular windows and save the upcharge for the Ledge; the views are nearly identical and the line isn't.
