Skydeck Chicago: Worth It?

Expect 360-degree views from 1,353 feet up, often stretching 50 miles on clear days across four states. The main draw is the set of glass boxes that extend out from the building so you can look straight down at the street below – it's a brief but intense thrill. The indoor deck is spacious with big windows, explanatory panels, and usually a decent number of visitors. On hazy or cloudy days the experience drops noticeably; you’ll still see the city but lose the drama of distant horizons. Lines for the elevators and glass ledges can eat 30–60 minutes on busy afternoons.

Best time is late spring through early fall on weekdays right after opening or in the hour before sunset. Summer evenings give you daylight views turning into city lights, but expect crowds. Winter offers fewer people and sharper air, though it can be brutally cold at that height and visibility is hit-or-miss. Plan on paying around $30–45 per adult for standard timed tickets; add $10–15 if you want to skip the regular line or visit both major decks in one day.

Pick a clear weekday morning or sunset slot and buy timed tickets in advance. Skip the souvenir photos and overpriced snacks on the deck – they’re average and you can do better back on the ground.
