The aquarium in Cape Town is a solid, modern facility focused on the Atlantic and Indian Ocean ecosystems. Expect to see African penguins, ragged-tooth sharks, colorful jellyfish, kelp forests, and a decent touch pool. The main tank is impressive and the daily diver feeds or talks add a bit of theater, but it's not massive compared to big international aquariums. Most people spend 90 minutes to two and a half hours here. It's clean, well-signed, and easy to walk through at your own pace. Families with kids rate it highly; adults without children often find it pleasant but not essential if your time is tight.
Best time to visit is during the shoulder seasons (March–May or September–November) when crowds are thinner and temperatures are comfortable. Summer (Dec–Feb) gets very busy with holidaymakers and school groups. Expect to pay around R250–R350 per adult and roughly half that for kids, with slightly higher rates in peak season. Combo tickets with Robben Island or hop-on buses can save money if those are already on your list.
Honest tip: prioritize the penguin exhibit and the big ocean tank; skip the small cinema unless you need a break. If you're prone to motion sickness, think twice about the optional glass-bottom boat ride in the harbor outside. It's fine for most visitors, but if you're mainly here for Table Mountain, beaches, or wine routes, this is an easy one to drop without regret.
