Cape Point Day Trip from Cape Town

Cape Point is the dramatic headland at the tip of the Cape Peninsula, about 1.5 hours from central Cape Town. Expect a mix of rugged cliffs, strong winds, sweeping ocean views, and a funicular or steep walk up to the lighthouse. Most people combine it with stops at Boulders Beach for penguins and the scenic drive along Chapman’s Peak. It’s a solid nature-focused day out rather than a relaxing beach one – bring layers, sunblock, and good shoes. The park itself is large; you’ll only see a fraction in a day trip.

Best time is December to March for longer days and calmer weather, though it’s busier. Shoulder months (October-November and April-May) often give you decent weather with fewer crowds. Avoid July-August if you dislike cold wind and rain. Expect to pay around R1,800–R3,500 per person for a guided full-day trip including transport and entry; a self-drive option with fuel and park fees usually lands around R800–R1,400 for two people sharing a car.

Tip: Prioritise an early start to beat the tour buses at the Point and Boulders. Skip the overpriced restaurant at the top – pack snacks or eat at the café near the car park instead. If you only have one day, pair Cape Point with penguins but drop the overcrowded Seal Island boat if wildlife isn’t your main interest.
