The Lisbon aquarium is a solid, modern facility built around one enormous central tank that connects four habitat zones – Atlantic, Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Antarctic. Expect to spend 90–120 minutes walking a circular route past sharks, rays, playful sea otters, penguins, and thousands of smaller fish. The lighting is good, the water looks clean, and the mood is calm rather than theme-park loud. It gets busy on weekends and during school holidays; the crowds can make it harder to stand and watch the big tank without people constantly moving past you.
Best time to visit is weekday mornings from October to April when the building is quieter and you can linger at the glass. In summer it stays crowded until late afternoon. Expect to pay around €20–28 for an adult ticket; children 12 and under are roughly half price, under-4s free. Add a few euros if you want the temporary exhibition or an audio guide.
Pick the main tank and the sea otters – they’re genuinely entertaining. Skip the tiny themed tanks on the upper level; most are underwhelming compared with the big ones. Bring water and a snack – the on-site café is overpriced and average. If you’re short on time or on a tight budget, you can comfortably skip it and head to the waterfront instead.
