Should You Visit Castelo de São Jorge in Lisbon?

The castle sits on the highest point in Alfama with decent views over the city and the river. Expect a mix of ruined walls, a small museum with archaeological bits, peacocks wandering around, and a fairly straightforward one-hour visit. It gets crowded; you'll share the ramparts with tour groups and lots of selfie sticks. The skip-the-line ticket saves time in high season but doesn't magically empty the place. It's fine for history fans and decent for photos, but if you're short on time or energy after climbing Lisbon's hills, it's skippable.

Best time is spring or fall. Summers are hot, crowded, and the lines are longest. Expect to pay around €15-25 for a basic skip-the-line ticket; guided tours or small-group options push closer to €35-60 per person. Private tours with transport are noticeably more.

Pick the standard skip-the-line ticket and go early in the morning. Skip the overpriced audio guide and any "premium" experiences that promise the same views with extra cost. Bring water, wear decent shoes for the uneven ground, and combine it with a wander through Alfama on the way down rather than trying to do everything in one ticket.
