Should You Visit Castelo de São Jorge?

Expect a solid half-day of hilltop views, wandering stone walls, and a bit of history without needing a full guided deep-dive. The castle sits high above Alfama with sweeping views over the Tagus and the city’s red rooftops. Inside you’ll find peacocks, a small archaeological site, and plenty of ramparts to walk. It gets crowded by mid-morning; the experience is nicest when you can move freely and actually enjoy the panorama instead of dodging selfie sticks.

Best time is spring or autumn. Summer days are hot, exposed, and packed; winter can be damp but the light is beautiful and lines are short. Expect to pay around €25–40 per person depending on whether you grab a basic skip-the-line ticket or add a short guided tour. Audio guides are available but many people find the free information panels enough.

Honest tips: buy skip-the-line tickets in advance if you’re visiting between 10 am and 4 pm. Skip the overpriced on-site café and instead walk ten minutes down the hill into Alfama for a proper pastel de nata and coffee afterwards. If you’re short on time or energy, the castle is pleasant but not essential; the views from the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte are nearly as good and completely free.
