Is the Santa Ana Aviation Museum Worth It?

The Lyon Air Museum sits right on the edge of John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana and focuses on World War II and Cold War aircraft. Expect a compact 30,000-square-foot hangar with about a dozen nicely restored planes including a B-17, P-38, several jets, and a couple of presidential aircraft. It's self-guided, takes most people 60-90 minutes, and has a small collection of artifacts and uniforms. The location is convenient if you're already near the airport or in Orange County, but it's not a massive Smithsonian-style experience. Planes are indoors so weather isn't a big factor, though the tarmac viewing area can get hot in summer.

Best time to visit is weekday mornings in spring or fall when crowds are lightest and temperatures are comfortable. Summer weekends get busy with families. Expect to pay around $15-25 per adult, $8-12 for kids, with parking at the airport rates (usually $2-3 for the first hour). It's a modest outing, not a full-day destination.

Tip: Spend most of your time on the WWII bombers and the walk-through presidential planes; those are the strongest part of the collection. Skip the gift shop unless you need a quick postcard. Pair it with a meal in nearby Irvine or Costa Mesa rather than eating at the airport.
