A small, old-school zoo tucked into a city park, the Santa Ana Zoo is compact enough to see everything in 2–3 hours. Expect a modest collection of animals—camels, monkeys, ocelots, reptiles, and a decent bird area—housed in somewhat dated enclosures. It’s not a world-class wildlife experience, but it’s genuinely pleasant for young kids or anyone wanting a low-key animal outing without crowds or massive walking. The park setting adds some shade and grass where you can picnic afterward.
Best time to visit is spring or fall when temperatures are comfortable; summer gets hot and sticky by midday, so go early. Expect to pay around $20–30 per adult and $10–20 per child including parking. It’s an easy half-day trip from central Orange County or as a stop between LA and San Diego.
Tip: prioritize the primate and big-cat areas—they’re the most active. Skip the gift shop and overpriced snacks inside; bring your own water and food instead. If you have older kids or want serious conservation exhibits, you’ll probably be happier at the San Diego Zoo.
