A Dublin Bay boat tour usually lasts 1–2 hours and takes you out from Howth or Dun Laoghaire along the coastline, past cliffs, seabird colonies, and sometimes as far as Ireland’s Eye. Expect cold wind even on sunny days, the constant slap of the Irish Sea, and decent chances of seeing puffins, guillemots, seals, and the odd dolphin. The commentary is generally informative but varies by skipper; some are excellent, others just point at things. It’s a proper small-boat experience – you’ll feel the swell and probably get a bit damp – not a floating lounge.
Best time is May to early September when the weather is kinder and the seabirds are nesting. June and July are busiest; shoulder months give you fewer crowds and lower prices. Expect to pay around €35–€55 per adult for a standard tour, €20–€35 for kids. Longer or faster rib tours sit at the higher end.
Pick a morning departure from Howth if you want calmer seas and better wildlife chances; skip the evening “sunset” tours unless the forecast is excellent – Irish weather loves to ruin romance. Bring a proper windproof jacket even if it looks sunny; the ones they lend you are usually thin and already damp.
