Beach Bonfire Guide for LA Visitors

Beach bonfires are a classic LA evening activity: you stake out a fire pit on the sand, bring wood or buy it nearby, and settle in with friends, drinks, and snacks while the sun drops. Expect a relaxed, social scene with other groups doing the same—music, laughter, and the smell of smoke and ocean. It gets chilly fast once the sun sets, even in summer, so layers are non-negotiable. The fire pits are first-come, first-served on most beaches; popular spots like Santa Monica or Venice fill up by late afternoon on weekends. The experience is casual and fun but can feel crowded and smoky if the wind blows the wrong way.

The best time is late spring through early fall (May–October) when evenings stay mild and fire restrictions are least likely. Winter bonfires are possible but often colder, windier, and subject to sudden cancellations. Expect to pay around $40–80 total for a small group: firewood bundles run $15–25 each, you’ll want snacks and drinks, plus parking or rideshare. Some beaches require a free permit you grab online in advance.

Pick a weekday if you can—it’s way easier to get a pit and feels less chaotic. Skip trying to bring your own glass bottles or expecting a quiet romantic night; this is a group, smoky, social thing. Bring blankets, a headlamp, and extra kindling—wet wood from the beach is useless.
