Big boat island hopping from Phuket means joining 50–150 other people on a large motorized vessel for a full-day cruise to places like Phang Nga Bay or the Phi Phi Islands. Expect a mix of scenic cruising, a few snorkel stops, beach time, and a buffet lunch on the boat or a beach. It’s social and straightforward: you’ll get picked up from your hotel, spend most of the day on or near the water, and be dropped back in the evening. The rides are stable but can feel crowded during peak season; the bigger the boat, the more people, noise, and queuing at swim stops.
The best time is December to March when the Andaman Sea is calmest and rainfall is lowest. Avoid the southwest monsoon (June–October) unless you don’t mind choppy seas and possible cancellations. Expect to pay around $60–110 per person depending on the route, inclusions, and whether you go mid-range or upgrade to a slightly less crowded “premium” big boat with better food and fewer passengers.
Pick Phang Nga Bay if you want dramatic limestone cliffs and sea caves; choose Phi Phi only if you’re happy with busier beaches and clearer water for snorkeling. Skip the cheapest mass-market trips that pack in four or five stops – they rush you and the experience suffers. Book one with a later start time so you miss the worst crowds at the first stop.
