Expect a full day on a decent-sized boat heading 30-60 minutes offshore into deep blue water where sailfish, wahoo, mahi-mahi, tuna and the occasional marlin patrol. The fishing is trolling with heavy tackle; when something hits, it’s chaotic, fast, and genuinely exciting. Between strikes you’ll be sitting on a rocking boat under strong sun, watching flying fish and the odd dolphin pod. Most trips run 5-8 hours and include basic lunch, cold drinks, and crew who handle bait, gaffs, and photos. It’s not luxurious but it feels properly offshore and raw compared to the usual Maldives resort day.
Best time is December to April when seas are calmer and the fish are more active; June to October can be rough with bigger swells and more cancellations. Expect to pay around $800–$1,600 for a private half-day charter for up to four people, or $150–$300 per person on a shared trip. Full-day private boats sit closer to $1,200–$2,200 depending on boat size and distance.
Tip: book a private half-day trip with just your group rather than a large shared boat — you’ll actually get to fish instead of waiting in line. Skip the cheapest harbour pickups; pay a bit more for a resort-arranged boat that collects you from the jetty and brings better gear and cooler drinks. Bring motion-sickness tablets, reef-safe sunscreen, and a hat even if you think you don’t need them.
