Bird Watching in Nairobi: What to Know

Nairobi National Park sits just outside the city, making it one of the easiest places in Africa to combine serious birding with a short trip. Expect open savanna, acacia woodland, and small wetlands that attract everything from ostriches and secretary birds to lilac-breasted rollers and colorful bee-eaters. A typical half-day tour runs 4–5 hours with an experienced guide who knows calls and likely spots. You’ll usually see 60–100 species in a morning, plus zebra, giraffe, and sometimes rhino. It’s not remote wilderness – you’ll hear traffic in places – but the birdlife is genuinely good and the convenience is hard to beat.

The best time is the dry season from June to October or January to February when birds concentrate around water and visibility is better. Avoid the long rains (April–May) unless you don’t mind mud and fewer sightings. Expect to pay around $80–$150 per person for a half-day private tour including park fees and an expert guide; cheaper group options exist but you sacrifice time and flexibility. Bring binoculars, a field guide or eBird app, and a light jacket for early starts.

Pick a half-day tour focused only on the park instead of trying to add multiple sites – it keeps the pace relaxed and the sightings higher quality. Skip full-day city-and-park combos unless you have energy to burn; they usually feel rushed for serious birders.
